September 4th, 2010 by Shaun Say what you will about a cappella, it’s portrayal in digital media is rarely flattering, but we consistently have the best and most loyal fans (take that Emo and Bluegrass!). I read of Justin Timberlake being booed off the stage in Canada and of objects being thrown at Lady Gaga, of country stars who can stand on their head while singing and still not be noticed, of amazing musicians toiling in obscurity for their art peppering the streets on NY, LA, and Nashville. Why are we any different? Because of you. True, in the past decade we did have a woman sit in the front row of a show in IA with headphones listening to her “favorite group” (obviously not us) and this past weekend at the MN State Fair we did have a gentleman read the paper from front to back during our entire set, but the former had her rods and cones mixed up and the latter was probably filming a new Parisian reality show on rude behavior in public settings. In either case, our experience has been almost perfectly wondrous. And today, I thank you for that memory and that experience. shaun
September 3rd, 2010 by Greg State fair, done. August, done. Summer? Pretty much done. What does that mean for your intrepid acappella adventurers? It means we’ll be on the road quite a bit in September! No kidding! Why don’t I tell you a bit about it! !!!!!!!!!! Let’s start with next week. Tuesday we head to Menomonie, WI, then the next day we head to Warsaw, IN for a workshop/show there which will happen on the 9th . After which we head towards Indianapolis for a weekend at the Midwest Arts Showcase culminating in a few performances that will wrap up the night of Monday the 13th…..drive back home on the 14th, then back out to Ohio on the 17th (just enough time to do laundry and see the fam), then it’s Pork Festival time with a show interspersed on Saturday the 18th at Vincennes University for Family Weekend, then back to the Pork Festival for 2 more shows on Sunday…..then, time to head for home! After more laundry and a couple nights in our own beds, we fly out to Florida on the 22nd for a corporate event on the 23rd, fly back on the 24th for a show at St. Ben’s, head to Winona on the 25th for a show at Winona State, take Sunday off, then head to Brainerd for a corporate event on the 27th…….. This, my friends, is how we like to kick off the fall, and it helps get us “in shape” for the upcoming holiday tour, which, crazily enough, is just around the corner! Get your tickets now! Right? Right! I better go do my laundry. Greg
Holiday tour helpAugust 30th, 2010 by Tonic Sol-fa We’re looking for liaisons to help in monitoring our publicity efforts in some of our holiday tour cities. These persons would provide up-to-date information regarding our publicity efforts for our holiday shows. This will include checking on posters, listening for radio ads and interviews, watching for t.v. ads, looking for newspaper ads and write-ups, etc. We’d need you to check in at scheduled intervals with our tour manager, which will correspond with scheduled publicity efforts, etc. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in helping out with, please sign up for our street team, and complete the order associated with the city of your choice (to receive proper recognition), or contact us via info@tonicsofa.com
This is not the first “chairs” vlog.August 17th, 2010 by Tonic Sol-fa How much do we love talking about chairs? Let us count the ways. Surprisingly, this vlog is actually different than the previous one, though you might not be able to tell at first glance. It’s kind of like the picture game in Greg’s Highlights magazine with the two drawings side-by-side, and you have to study both of them to determine the differences between the two. Yeah, it’s like that.
August 15th, 2010 by Greg Guess where we’re going to be next week! That’s right folks, it’s time yet again for the “Great Minnesota Get Together!” Here’s a sample list for what your day could look like at the fair….. 9am-Pass through gates Hope to see you there! G
August 13th, 2010 by Shaun What do you know about running a business? Everything! Nobody has more passion for your idea than you and nobody has all the answers you crave. And no one will try to do more than you to ensure success. That’s why I’m going over this weeks “finished” column and sipping champagne (did I say sipping? – yes, I did – it’s right there in the earlier part of this sentence).
Inflatable chairsAugust 10th, 2010 by Tonic Sol-fa The boardroom isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Here you will see the painful side of coming up with comedic bits for our show. This should help you appreciate our suffering for our art, and how it makes us suffer. Art=music.
