Love the response we are getting from TSF spring shows centered around “twenty one”… I think back to the studio days with ideas being batted to and fro, with Greg’s arrangements coming in daily…listening to songs from around the country and writing and rewriting verses to songs which would never be (and a few that were). And as I drive back from the airport today, “Butch Cassidy” came on due to a shuffling iPod. Though I can’t forward through music fast enough when I hear our songs typically, I stopped to listen for a bit. I stopped because we’ve been ending our first half with this song and was surprised at the reaction. Of course, live is a different animal than the studio but a sincere thanks to all who’ve given this song a second and third life. See you on the road!

Hmmm. If I didn’t watch the news, check my computer, look at my phone, or peruse any other type of media source that tells me the current temperature, and simply went off of the blue skies and sunshine I see out my window, I’d say it looks like a pretty nice, relatively warm day.

A day where one could break the surly bonds of the heavy winter coat, gloves, scarf and stocking cap, and go for a brisk spring jog in just a sweatshirt and running tights (as Mark is known to do), and become one with nature on one if the first days of spring.

Would this be a wise decision? I say “ix-nay.” Yes, I just used Pig Latin. Or Ig-pay Atin-lay. Ery-vay Ool-cay.

I say this because all it takes is to open your front door, let the 9° arctic blast say hello (at least in my neighborhood), and you would most likely agree that the indoor treadmill is still – at this time – the better bet, and that though the calendar says spring has sprung, I believe it’s still coiled up like a sneaky jack-in-the-box that waits just a few more moments than you expect, then, with one lightning fast motion, gives you that momentary jump of surprise, and announces to all “I’m finally here! Bask in my glory!”

Much like Mark when he shows up in the aforementioned light sweatshirt and running tights.

Ot-nay ool-cay, Ark-may.

I don’t know how closely you have all been paying attention, but you may have noticed an on-going string of vehicular mishaps over the past few years. I would love nothing more than to identify the individual responsible for each incident, but sadly, I would be only pointing at myself. From climbing rocks in Wyoming and jack-knifing the trailer into the rear bumper to clipping a deer in Clearwater and rolling over one too many sharp objects with the trailer, I have amassed a distinguished list of fender-benders and flat tires. I suppose it all comes with the territory, at least I can think that as I keep an eye out for all the other beat up trucks and trailers cruising the highways. Soon, we will no longer be a member of that parade as the last of the body work on the truck will be finished during a break in our February schedule and a new trailer is in the works for summer delivery. I think I speak for all of us when I say we can’t wait for the truck and trailer be back at full-strength…if only for a little while.

Ok. So I live in Minnesota. I have for almost 20 years now. I grew up in South Dakota. Not that different, right? Especially when it comes to winter, right? Right. So you would think that by now, I would be fine with the oh so cold winter and the days on end with no sunshine. But you know something? I’m not. I’ll be honest, I like some of the fun outdoor activities that come along with wintertime – skiing, snowball fights, burying Mark in the snow and then forgetting where we put him….all fun. But somedays, you’re just ready for a good old fashioned heat wave. Right now, that would mean temps above 10 degrees – but I digress……
I do have to say that this was a pretty fun January – we started it with a trip to Columbus, OH (always fun), then a few shows in our backyard of Maplewood, and we rounded it all out with a mini-tour of Wisconsin where we made a lot of new friends! So overall, I guess it was pretty good!
So, what am I complaining about then, you ask? To be honest, now I don’t really know. Maybe I’m just punchy. Maybe I’m not looking forward to having to go out in the cold and locate a snow buried Mark McGowan. Could be anything, really.
Know what I do like? Spring is just around the corner. If that corner is like 500 miles away. But I know it’s there – I just know it. Just like I know Mark is still wherever we buried him. I just know it. I hope. Gosh, I hope. Blah.

What a fantastic run of shows in WI this past week. When audiences/communities/students embrace what you are doing, it makes one wish to stay out on the road… or get back out on the road shortly. But January and February are also the perfect time to head home to re-learn “new” music from “twenty one,” plot the 2013 Christmas show details in a highly-secured location, plan touring opportunities to other parts of the world and write Christmas thank-you’s (from 2009). Still I must admit that I am already looking forward to the warm breezes of summer shows… when audiences are relaxing in the lawn chairs with the wrap around Ray Bans… when singing “Toes” makes more sense. And if you do hear a blonde guy in the airport baggage line singing a Zac Brown Band tune, just join in on the harmony. I… ahem, he… won’t skip a beat.

With the 2012 holiday tour finally over and the past year becoming a distant memory, we want to give a huge thank-you to our sponsors to wrap things up.

First-off is a thanks to our major sponsor, Wells Blue Bunny, who has worked with us not just on our holiday tour, but throughout the entire year. This great corporation collaborated with us yet again, allowing us to promote their delicious product, meanwhile helping us to accomplish a myriad of opportunities within our industry. (Gotta go get a bowl of Bunny Tracks, with all this talk of ice-cream.)

We also want to thank St. Cloud Toyota for donating the Sequoia for us to use during our holiday tour. It was the perfect vehicle for the midwest winter roads! You can also be assured that we avoided eating Cheetos, spaghetti, bbq ribs and sloppy joes while in your fine motorcar.

We wish you both a happy and prosperous 2013!

Many thanks,
